6 Tips For A Healthy Brain As Your Age!

While away from home over the weekend I read “The Science of Fate” By Hannah Critchlow, in which she outlines a conversation with a fellow neuroscientist. Together they are two leading figures in brain function specifically biased to maintaining a healthier brain as we age.  

 

Together they compiled a list of things they do daily to ensure our brains stay as healthy and resilient as possible as we age. 

 

As we all know the brain is the most important tissue in the body. It literally controls EVERYTHING else. From our personality, our behaviours, our muscles or health and lifespan all boil down to the health of our brains.

 

But there is the false belief that our brains deteriorate and worsen as we age, which they do, UNLESS we do something to improve them. 

 

SO i’ve saved you the grief of reading the book yourself and will outline the 6 key activities you can do to ensure you have a healthy brain as you age as recommended by the experts. 

 

  1. Be Physically Active 

It doesn't always have to be strenuous. As little as 30 minutes 3x per week walking can encourage neurogenesis or neuron growth as well as keeping your brain capillaries healthy. 

2. Sleep

Sleep allows our brains to transfer memories from short term to long term as well as allows your autoimmune system to remove harmful toxins that build up in your brain during the day.

3. Stay socially active

Discussing and learning the perceptions and opinions of friends allows your brain to process dynamically and is generally associated to well being.

4. Check your diet

Foods such as animal fats, processed food and too much sugar are associated with poor cognitive function. The general rule is to eat for your heart and brain as one, which protects from microstrokes.

5.Keep Learning

Statistically those who remain in education for longer have healthier brains for longer. But that can apply to any learning, not just formal education. 

6. Say positive

Believing you have a poor memory is associated with a swifter decline. It's a self perpetuating cycle. SO be positive in your thoughts and actions.

Unfortunately, guess what clients report to suffer most when they are too busy.

  • Not enough time to exercise.
  • Not enough time to sleep 8 hours per night.
  • Not enough time to socialise.
  • Too busy to eat or cook from scratch.
  • Not enough time to read or start another course.
