Change Isn't All Or Nothing!

When you want to start something new, live your life in a different way or make better decisions the first stumbling block is usually just starting. There are lots of reasons and plenty of research why a lot of people find them first steps so hard.

We can talk about goal setting, motivation, motivators etc until we’re blue in the face. But something I’ve noticed recently that gets overlooked is the mentality around parts of your expectation. Your idea that to do ‘insert change here’ it has to be all or nothing, all at once.

Say for example if you want to exercise more. A lot of the time that involves going on a walk, run or going to the gym 2 or 3 times a week. For someone who has never done anything like that before this is a huge change. A scary change. It’s just easier not to start.

But that’s not the case. You can start with little things. Increase your activity from 0% to 10%. Get used to doing that and then increase it up to 20%, and so on. You don’t have to go all in straight away. Make your changes easier to digest and ‘scariness’ becomes a lot less. 

I know it seems pretty simple, but changing that mentality can be the catalyst for a positive change in pretty much any part of your life. Don’t get caught up in the ideal end goal, for now just start.
