Many of our clients comment on how different it is what we do to what they experienced in different places. The reason is that we look at the body globally and we focus on improving the functioning of the nervous system by allowing it to have clearer map of the body. It is simple: the better the nervous system is functioning, the better the whole body is functioning too.

There is a part of the brain that is considered to be the conductor of the whole orchestra, the reality check, the main decision making centre. That is the prefrontal cortex. Why it is so important and how chiropractic treatment can affect it?

Chiropractic adjustment helps to clear subluxations, and we are not talking here about the old, structural model- the ‘bone out of place model’. Subluxation are areas in the spine that are not moving properly which are negatively affecting the brain ability to see what is going on in the body and in the world around it. Our brain, sitting in the dark skull, needs information from the joints and tissues around the them, especially around the spine to know what is going on with the body. It is part of the communication between the brain and the body. It needs to flow smoothly both ways for everything to work at optimal level. Once the communication between the body and the brain is improved, this can impact in positive way the whole body: the immune system, mental health, inflammation levels.

The most important part of that communication in the brain is the prefrontal cortex.

The prefrontal cortex is not just about pain processing and motor control. It is considered to be the conductor of the orchestra, the part of the brain that controls the rest, makes rational judgements. It monitors all that is coming in, all the input, memories etc. and makes the judgement about the reality. The list of its executive functions is long:

AttentionInhibition of actionExecution of action PlanningMonitor sensory inputMemoryLearningInitiationHypothesis GenerationCognitive flexibilityDecision MakingJudgementFeedback utilizationSelf- perception that is necessary for effective and contextually appropriate behaviourIntelligenceThe prefrontal cortex can be heavily affected by stress, especially traumatic stress that then can lead to dysfunction of this area of the brain and as a result lead to mental disorders, weakened immunity, inflammation, chronic diseases, chronic pain and so on.

The chiropractic does not fix these things but because chiropractic adjustment can affect the prefrontal cortex by clearing subluxations, it essentially influences all the other things that the prefrontal cortex controls. The better your nervous system is working, the better the rest of the body is functioning.

If you would like to find out how well your nervous system is functioning, why not come to one of our discovery days or book an initial consultation.
