The term "soft tissue" covers a broad range of structures, technically including skin, fat, smooth muscle, and blood vessels. During a myofascial treatment, though, we're mainly concerned with four structures: muscles, tendons, ligaments, and fascia. Muscles do more than move your body from place to place; they also protect the joints they surround. That's why strength and flexibility both matter for keeping muscles healthy. Tendons are built from strong collagen fibres and elastin, which gives them more give than ligaments but far less stretch than muscle. Their job is to attach muscle firmly to bone. When a muscle contracts, it pulls on its tendon, and that tendon pulls on the bone it's attached to, creating movement at the joint. Bend your elbow, and you're feeling your biceps tendon doing exactly this kind of work.
The point where muscle transitions into tendon, known as the musculotendinous junction, is a common site of injury. Overstretched or torn tendons are called strains. Tendonitis, a very common tendon injury, often develops after overuse combined with a hypertonic, or overly tight, surrounding muscle. Tendons also absorb some of the impact that muscles take on as they spring into action.
Understanding these basics helps explain why effective treatment rarely focuses on just one structure.
