One question I ask a lot of clients is: "have you heard of the fight or flight response?" The answer is almost always yes. But when I ask if they actually know what it is, the answer is almost always no.
Every single person reading this has experienced this response, probably more often than you realise. In short bursts, it's genuinely useful. It helps your body react fast enough to stay out of immediate danger. Staying in this state for long periods, however, starts to harm your overall health.
Your nervous system is made up of many different branches and sub-branches, each playing a distinct role in keeping you alive. The sympathetic nervous system, or SNS, covers almost the entire body and is responsible for the fight or flight response. It regulates blood vessels, causing vasoconstriction in most areas except the coronary vessels and those supplying skeletal muscles. This diverts blood away from non-essential organs and functions, so your heart and skeletal muscles get a larger supply during moments of stress, making it easier for you to fight or flee. It also stays active during calmer moments, playing a role in airway dilation during normal breathing, allowing more air into the body.
The SNS also regulates your immune response, since it innervates organs like the spleen, thymus, and lymph nodes, giving it a direct role in the inflammatory process. During prolonged periods of stress, cortisol levels rise. This is the hormone responsible for regulating inflammatory and immune responses in the body. Over time, elevated cortisol causes your tissues to become desensitised to it, which paradoxically leads to increased inflammation. The parasympathetic nervous system, or PNS, does the opposite of the SNS and governs the rest and digest state, the setting your body should function in most often when no active stressor is present. Around 75% of the PNS comes from the vagus nerve, which directly influences both cardiac function and digestion. It's responsible for slowing heart rate, bringing blood pressure back to normal, and increasing salivation and peristaltic activity, meaning the involuntary muscles of your gut return to their usual function. Like the SNS, the PNS stays active during breathing too, though its role is to keep the airway rigid so it doesn't collapse as you exhale.
The third branch of the ANS, the enteric nervous system, communicates with both the SNS and PNS. Its main role centres on digestion, controlling muscle contraction and relaxation, secretion and reabsorption, and local blood flow. It works largely through reflexes, and also helps regulate heart rate and immune function.
