Inflammation is always a popular topic and a large consideration in the medical field. It is part of many vital processes in our bodies that keep us alive and functioning every single day.

However inflammation can also cause us lots of problems when it’s undesired. Chronic inflammation can significantly weaken our system and put many parts of our body in danger. From our heart to our joints, soft tissues to gut function, inflammation needs to be well regulated and controlled, not kept around because of our poor choices.

Here are some common things that cause these raised inflammation levels that can cause chronic inflammation.

1- Foods that are high in fat (e.g fried foods, red meats), high in sugar, or that contain refined carbohydrates (white breads, pastries). The effects of these start to snowball when/if you become obese, as obesity itself further increases health risk factors and inflammation levels.  Swapping these foods out for healthier alternatives is an effortless way to reduce the impact today.

2- Smoking - Cigarrets, vapes, drugs will all cause raised inflammatory markers if consumed on a regular basis. Quit now! It’s not easy, take it from someone who has done it. The benefits massively outweigh the risks.

3-  High stress levels will increase the amount of cortisol in your system which directly influences your inflammation levels. Chronic high stress will no doubt cause increased inflammation. The stress doesn’t have to be mental either. Pain, lack of sleep, injury and environment can all cause stress on your body.

4- Lack of OR too much high-level exercise can both result in chronic inflammation. The benefits of exercising are well known and will put your system in a much better place health wise, including reducing your inflammation levels. Too much exercise (over training) is also an issue as inflammation is the process in which helps our bodies repair stronger after exercise is done. If you don’t let it fully recover, or keep damaging it long term, chronic inflammation will occur.

5- Long term exposure to toxins will cause our bodies natural chemical balance to slowly change and become less able to regulate itself properly, leading to increased inflammation (among other things). This can come from chemicals we ingest in our foods, piercings on lips/tongue, fillings in our teeth, mould in our house/anywhere you regularly visit.
