Why Melatonin Isn't the Fix for Poor Sleep

A recurring theme has come up in recent conversations with clients, parents, and teachers alike: surprise at how many children are now taking melatonin or a similar supplement to help them sleep. Having recently looked into artificial light and its effect on our circadian rhythm and pineal gland function, it felt like the right time to explain what's actually going on.
Your circadian rhythm is your body's built-in clock, designed to trigger the release of sleep hormones hours before you intend to sleep. This process kicks in as less light reaches your eyes, such as when the sun sets. That reduced light stimulates your pineal gland, a small, raisin-shaped structure in the brain, to release melatonin. Melatonin is the hormone responsible for helping you fall and stay asleep through the night.
It's worth clearing up a common misunderstanding here. Melatonin isn't actually responsible for that drowsy, ready-for-bed feeling. That's down to a separate chemical called adenosine, which builds up in your brain throughout the day while you're awake. The two systems work together, but they operate independently. Melatonin's specific job is helping you fall asleep and stay asleep for the roughly eight hours humans need for optimal brain function.
Artificial light, commonly known as blue light, effectively tricks your pineal gland into thinking it's still daytime. It increases the amount of light entering your eyes, which delays both the stimulation of the pineal gland and the release of melatonin.
That explains a lot. It's no surprise that children and adults who spend two or three hours before bed watching television, scrolling on phones, or playing console games often struggle to get a full, efficient eight hours of sleep. This isn't down to a lack of effort or motivation. It's biology. Through these habits, people are actively suppressing the systems their bodies have evolved to prepare them for sleep.
Given all this, turning to a melatonin supplement raises a few problems. It reinforces habits that are working against you in the first place. It feeds into a wider assumption that there's always a quick fix available when something isn't working as it should. And in practice, it often still doesn't deliver a genuinely full night's sleep afterwards.
The more effective approach is reducing artificial light exposure for two to three hours before bed. That means less television, less social media, and fewer games in that window. Doing this allows your body to do exactly what it has evolved and refined to do, through millions of years of trial and error, without needing to override it artificially.
If that isn't motivation enough on its own, it's worth knowing that poor sleep doesn't just affect how rested you feel the next day. Recent research has also pointed to a connection between poor sleep in infancy and the development of autism, adding another reason why protecting healthy sleep patterns matters, particularly early in life.
Is melatonin bad for children to take? The concern here isn't melatonin itself, but what it papers over. Relying on it regularly can reinforce habits, like heavy screen use before bed, that are actively working against natural sleep processes.
What's the difference between melatonin and adenosine? Melatonin helps you fall and stay asleep, released in response to reduced light exposure. Adenosine is what actually makes you feel drowsy, building up steadily in the brain throughout the day. They work together but operate through separate systems.
